Background of the Study
Political instability refers to the absence of stable and predictable governance, often marked by frequent changes in leadership, corruption, violence, and civil unrest. This instability can have significant negative effects on economic performance, as it disrupts the implementation of policies, discourages investment, and creates an environment of uncertainty. Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, has experienced periods of political instability, characterized by intra-party conflicts, ethnic tensions, and protests, all of which have disrupted governance and economic activities.

The economic growth of Jalingo LGA has been hindered by these political challenges. Businesses face uncertainty, agricultural productivity declines, and infrastructure development is stifled. Furthermore, political instability leads to the displacement of people, loss of livelihoods, and diminished investor confidence. This study aims to explore the impact of political instability on the economic growth of Jalingo LGA, focusing on how governance challenges have affected local economic activities and overall development.

Statement of the Problem
Jalingo LGA has experienced political instability over the years, and its impact on the local economy is profound. Despite the region's potential for agricultural growth, industrial development, and infrastructural expansion, political instability has created an environment where economic growth is stunted. Frequent leadership changes and political crises discourage investors and disrupt the daily lives of residents. This study seeks to examine the specific ways in which political instability has hindered economic growth in Jalingo LGA, with a focus on key sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, and business.

  1. To assess the impact of political instability on the economic growth of Jalingo LGA.

  2. To examine the effects of political instability on key economic sectors such as agriculture and business in Jalingo.

  3. To explore the role of governance in shaping economic development in Jalingo LGA.

Research Questions

  1. How has political instability affected economic growth in Jalingo LGA?

  2. What impact has political instability had on agriculture and business activities in Jalingo LGA?

  3. How does governance contribute to economic growth or decline in Jalingo LGA?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Political instability has significantly hindered economic growth in Jalingo LGA.

  2. Agricultural and business activities in Jalingo LGA have been adversely affected by political instability.

  3. Effective governance can mitigate the negative impacts of political instability on economic growth in Jalingo LGA.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on Jalingo LGA, Taraba State, and will cover the period from 2010 to 2025. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and secondary sources. Limitations include the difficulty in obtaining unbiased information due to the political sensitivity of the subject and the challenge of isolating political instability from other factors affecting economic growth.
